Our Learn to Sail instructors are certified by SailCanada and provide instruction in CANSail 1 through 6 levels:

CANSail 1 Introduction to sailing. Teaches sailors the fundamental sailing skills including basic sheeting, steering, and boat handling on all points of sail. Sailors can sail within defined boundaries set by an instructor. Covers safety, seamanship, rigging, and basic boat handling under instructor supervision in wind speeds of 4-9 knots (8-15 km/hr).

CANSail 2 Basic sailing. Teaches sailors to adjust their bodies and boats for changes in direction and wind speed while sailing, and to perform boat-handling manoeuvers in a controlled manner while in a controlled setting. Teaches nautical terminology and additional seamanship and boat handling skills under instructor direction. This level completes the training to give the student the minimum knowledge and skills a sailor requires to sail safely and competently in wind speeds of 4-9 knots (8-15 km/hr).

CANSail 3 Intermediate sailing. Teaches sailors to integrate the fundamental boat handling manoeuvers and balance with basic tactics and strategy as well as applied sail trim. Sailors are exposed to a greater variety of conditions and participate in a club race or club training camp. Introduces the sailor to sail trim and basic boat tuning. Covers safety, seamanship, terminology, sail theory, sail shape and advanced boat handling skills in winds of 9-14 knots.

CANSail 4 Advanced sailing. Teaches sailors to perform advanced boat handling manoeuvers in a variety of conditions. Sailors can successfully execute manoeuvers in competitive settings and for tactical and strategic purposes. Sailors could participate in a one to two-day local regatta. Advances the sailor’s knowledge of sail theory and boat handling skills using a spinnaker and trapeze in winds of 9-14 knots.

CANSail 5/6 Focuses on skill development, teamwork, and friendly competition primarily in double handed boats (C420s) and is an introduction to racing. Covers racing rules, racing signals, sail theory, race management, protests, tactics, and boat handling skills in wind speeds of up to 18 knots. Participants will have the opportunity to compete in local and regional regattas. Program runs in conjunction with the Development Race Team. More specifically:

  • CANSail 5 Basic integration of racing. Fully integrates boat handling with tactics and strategy. Sailors are also introduced to the concept of rig tuning and its relation to boat trim and conditions.
  • CANSail 6 Full integration of racing. Fully integrates boat handling, sail trim, and rig setup with racing. Sailors train to perform all skills within a competitive race setting in order to achieve accurate sailing within a regatta and in all conditions.
